Gun Check Hub (GCH) is a data visualization site that focuses on firearms background checks. Background check data come from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reports. Population data come from the U.S. Census Bureau. Data are updated monthly. Data for Guam, Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands are included.
About the NICS. NICS allows firearm dealers to instantly check if a prospective buyer is eligible to purchase firearms or explosives. NICS checks various federal and state databases to determine if the buyer has a criminal record, history of mental illness, or other disqualifying factors. Read more about NICS.
About sales-adjusted figures. Sales-adjusted figures serve as a proxy for firearms sales but do not represent actual numbers of guns sold. Figures are calculated by excluding background checks for permits and other administrative purposes. In some cases, sales-adjusted figures may be greater than total background checks due to sales of multiple items. Figures may include sales of non-firearms items.
